The father of retired Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis has been arrested in California on charges of molesting two minors to whom he provided tennis lessons. "[He] works as a personal tennis coach … and the alleged molestation victims took tennis lessons from him," Rylaarsdam told Australian broadcaster ABC. Nikolaos Philippoussis, 68, was arrested Tuesday at his home in Mira Mesa, California, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Greg Rylaarsdam told Fox 5 San Diego. "We've developed probable cause to believe that this did in fact occur," Rylaarsdam told the local news station. The younger Philippoussis won two Davis Cup titles with Australia, in 1999 and 2003.

Steve Walker, a spokesman for the San Diego County district attorney, said any criminal charges would be filed at Philippoussis' arraignment, which must be held by Friday. Mark Philippoussis, a two-time Grand Slam finalist who once ranked as high as eighth in the world, lives in coastal North County. The older Philippoussis was a central figure in his son's career and served as his coach and manager until Mark Philippoussis struck out on his own in 2006, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. On Wednesday afternoon, a man who answered a phone associated with the tennis player said "no comment" before hanging up.

The father of retired Australian tennis star Mark Philippoussis pleaded "not guilty" on Thursday to charges he sexually assaulted two nine year old girls he coached in California. Nikolaos Salvator Philippoussis, 68 is being held on $9.2 million bail and was ordered to surrender his passport in the event that he posts bail and is released. He was working as a private tennis instructor in San Diego County at the time of the alleged assaults and is charged with two counts of sexual penetration/oral copulation with a child under 10 and a dozen counts of lewd act on a child under 14.
